Poundmaker's Marker
Pîhtokahanapiwiyin (Poundmaker) was a respected Cree leader celebrated for his dedication to peace and diplomacy. Born in the mid-1840s, he was adopted by Chief Crowfoot of the Blackfoot Confederacy, fostering ties between the Cree and Blackfoot nations. Poundmaker played a pivotal role in negotiating Treaty 6, advocating for his people’s rights and seeking harmonious relations with settlers.
After his passing on July 4, 1886, he was originally buried on Siksika territory, a land connected to his adoptive father, Chief Crowfoot. However, in keeping with his legacy and the wishes of his people, Poundmaker was later exhumed and reburied at the Poundmaker Cree Nation's reserve in Saskatchewan, near the community of Poundmaker. His final resting place now serves as a symbol of his enduring legacy of peace and unity.
