Blackfoot Landmark
The Siksikaitsitapi landmark, designed by elder Aatso’taowa (Andy Blackwater) from Kainai, honors the Blackfoot tradition of marking significant places. This Aakihtsimaani (stone marking) embodies the Blackfoot essence and identity, reinforcing their connection to the land. Symbols chosen by Aatso’taowa reflect Blackfoot roots, traditions, and values. The circle represents the cycle of life, and the cross symbolizes a leader's signature, such as Akokskainaa, a prominent chief. Hoof marks highlight the seasonal movement of the Blackfoot Nations, while triangles in each quarter represent the four Blackfoot nations.
This landmark serves as a place for reflection, symbolizing the Blackfoot Confederacy’s kinship with the land and their belief as Niitsitapi, "The Real People," in being equal partners with all beings in the universe.
